Just a reminder that the following needs to be completed during lessons this week and for completion by the end of Friday10th May:

All: All of you must have completed Task Sheet 1, together with the associated worksheets and the Gurkha fact sheet.

Some: Some of you should be able to complete Task Sheet 2, together with the associated worksheets.

Few: A few of you should be able to start Task Sheet 3, plus worksheets and  may even be able to finish the work.

Expedition and Load Carrying Exercise

Remember, next Wednesday (14th May) we are undertaking the load carrying exercise from college to the Thames Barrier. It is not a long route (approx. 9 Km), but you will be carrying rucksacks with a 20Kg load to simulate the weight you will be carrying in June.

The two day expedition is confirmed for 4th/5th June, along the Saxon Shore Way between Faversham and Herne Bay in Kent.

UNIT 9 NAVIGATION EXERCISE

The Year 12 Public Services class successfully completed Leg 3 of the London Loop on Wednesday 26th March, as part of their Unit 9 assessment. Leg 3 stretches from Petts Wood to Hayes and was completed in good weather, albeit for a short hail shower! All participating students took charge of at least one leg of the route and successfully navigated using map and compass between checkpoints.

Here the class is taking a short rest at a checkpoint.

PUBLIC SERVICES STUDENT SUCCESS

60 SECOND INTERVIEW

As part of a new series of 60 Second Interviews, I spoke to Adam Green of the year 13 Public Services class.  Adam has successfully gained a place on an apprenticeship with a difference – learning the skills required to operate motorised craft on the River Thames.

Q: Could you describe the apprenticeship you will be taking?

My apprenticeship will be with City Cruises on the River Thames based in Bermondsey, working on their fleet of cruise boats, including a jet boat. The contact is for 4 days a week learning the job on the boats and 1 day continuing education in college.
Q: What was the application and selection process like?
There was considerable competition for the apprenticeship. The first 3 days were at the Skills 4 Growth apprenticeship centre in Woolwich. After that, those selected to continue spent a day on the river with City Cruises, followed by an interview. Those who passed the interview then had to research a project relating to the River Thames and give a presentation to the Board. My presentation was on Butler’s Wharf, a shipping and warehouse complex.
Q: What skills and qualifications will the apprenticeship give you?
After I successfully complete the two year apprenticeship I should achieve my boat licence for powered craft on the River Thames. The qualification is transferrable and I could use it for example to work with the Metropolitan Police in their river department.

Q: Where do you think the apprenticeship could take you, say in 5-10 years time?

I am looking forward to a full career on the river, including in time, taking command of my own boat as a Master.
Q: Would you recommend the apprenticeship route to other students?
Yes. There is the same challenge and demands of a university course, but without the funding concerns. In fact I will be paid £200 a week throughout my apprenticeship.

Thank you Adam and the very best of luck in your future career.

Mr Wilson

Work to complete today:

Yr 12: Please ensure that the following work is completed today-

1. Complete the expedition report for Shackleton's 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition
2. Make sure that the two previous reports are completed and printed off

We will start the 4th and final expedition report on Friday.

The 2003 invasion of Iraq
Planning a Gap Year expedition
1975 Zaire River expedition
Charles Darwin's voyage on The Beagle
World Challenge expeditions for students

Yr 13: Please aim to complete the Assignment Brief work for Unit 36 today and Friday as it is my intention to start Unit 20 on Tuesday (4th Feb). There are also one or two gaps in other units that need to be sorted out before we move on. Check the tracking sheets on the G Drive!
