Dowgate Fire Station Visit 22 Feb 12

Year 12 and 13 Public Service students had the opportunity to visit Dowgate Fire Station in the City of London on 22 Feb 12. The visit was organised by Mr Atmore and provided an ideal opportunity for students to engage with full time firefighters.

Level 3 Units 9 & 10: Walking the London Loop

Level 3 Public Service students from 12A and 13 will be walking the first section of the London Loop path on Thursday 8th March.
Leg 2 will be completed on Wed 18 Apr 12 (12A0 and Thu 19 Apr 12 (Yr 13)

Public Services Vocational Visits

The following Vocational Visits have been organised for Public Services learners in years 12 and 13 who are not involved in the Cyprus visit during the week of 12-16 March 2012:

Monday 12 March: Gravesend RNLI station
Tuesday 13 March: London Transport Museum at Covent Garden
Friday 16 March: Museum of London Docklands

There are also visits for Yr 12 Level 2 learners completing Unit 10 (Land Navigation):

Tue 28 Feb 12: NAVEX to Erith
Tue 27 Mar 12: NAVEX and QUALIFYING EXERCISE to Dartford Heath.

There will be no charge for any of these events. Letters will shortly be available on the blog and G Drive.




Year 12 Level 3 Wednesday 1st February 2012: Unit 9 Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

There will be no teachers available today and so you will need to carry out individual self study.


Recap from the last lesson: Introduction to the Unit and outline of expectations. Lesson 1 is located in the Unit 9 file on the G Drive in the Public Services area.

Tasks:

1. Review the Lesson 1 powerpoint presentation ( Time 10 mins max).
2. Start/continue the task of researching 3 expeditions:
    a. Ellen MacArthur's fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe
    b. The 1974 Zaire River expedition (Colonel John Blashford-Snell)
    c. The 1979 Trans-Globe expedition (Ranulph Feinnes) (Your target is to complete 1 of these today and to begin working on a second)
    d. The fourth expedition (Shackleton's 1914 Trans-Antarctic expedition will be covered as a class  activity/case study on Thursday 2nd Feb)

3. Present each piece of research using a common format (see below), using Powerpoint. You may well wish to use supporting images/maps/web links, etc.

4. Be prepared to submit your research for marking, either on paper or via email to jwilson@crownwoods.org.uk

5. Be prepared to brief the rest of the class on a selected expedition on Friday 3rd Feb, during period 4 in AR 108. You will therefore need to adapt you description to a BRIEFING, using the established briefing format. This task is homework before Friday!

This will prepare you for the forthcoming Assignment and in particular:

P1: "Describe four different types of expedition"
M1: "Compare and contrast four different types of expedition"
